Many states received billions in federal funding to help homeowners. This directory shows active programs by state, including Homeowner Assistance Funds, emergency mortgage relief, and foreclosure prevention programs.
Important: Many state HAF programs are running low on funds or have closed to new applicants. Check your state's current status below and apply immediately if funds are still available.

Typical Eligibility Requirements
While each state's program is different, most HAF programs have similar eligibility criteria:
- Income Requirements: Household income at or below 150% of Area Median Income (AMI). Priority for households below 100% AMI.
- Hardship After January 2020: Must have experienced financial hardship due to COVID-19 or other qualified event after January 21, 2020.
- Owner-Occupied: Must own and live in the property as your primary residence.
- Documentation: Proof of hardship, income verification, mortgage statements, tax returns, and property ownership.
What Programs Typically Cover
Direct Payment Assistance:
- • Past-due mortgage payments (principal & interest)
- • Delinquent property taxes
- • Homeowners insurance arrears
- • HOA or condo association fees
- • Mortgage-related costs and fees
Some States Also Cover:
- • Utility bills (water, electric, gas)
- • Forward payments (3-6 months ahead)
- • Home repairs for habitability
- • Legal assistance fees
- • Counseling services
Application Process
Check Eligibility & Program Status

Gather Required Documents
Typically need: tax returns, pay stubs, bank statements, mortgage statements, hardship documentation, proof of occupancy.
Submit Online Application
Most states use online portals. Application takes 30-60 minutes. Submit all documents at once to avoid delays.
Wait for Review
Processing typically takes 30-90 days. State will contact you if additional documentation needed.
Funds Disbursed to Servicer
If approved, state pays your servicer directly. You'll receive notification when payment is complete.
